Inside Out: Interoception in Pediatric Practice
When: Virtual- On Demand
Description
Interoception, our ability to sense and interpret signals from within the body, plays a central role in regulation, emotional experience, motor planning, attention, and behavior. Yet in clinical practice, interoception is often misunderstood, oversimplified, or addressed indirectly without a clear conceptual framework. This three-part advanced training series offers clinicians a comprehensive and clinically grounded exploration of interoception through a neurobiological and developmental lens. Drawing from neuroscience, sensory integration theory, trauma-informed care, and Polyvagal Theory, the workshop examines how interoceptive processing influences regulation, learning, and participation in everyday life.
Participants will explore the neurobiology of interoceptive processing, how internal body signals contribute to emotional and behavioral responses, and how interoception presents across pediatric clinical profiles including autism, ADHD, trauma, and sensory processing differences. Rather than separating theory from intervention, this workshop integrates clinical reasoning, observation, and intervention throughout. Through case examples, reflective discussion, and practical strategies, clinicians will learn how to recognize interoceptive differences and support children in developing more adaptive body awareness and regulation. The workshop is designed for experienced clinicians working with children, including occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, psychologists, educators, and allied professionals seeking to deepen their understanding of the body-brain connection in pediatric practice.
Outline / Agenda:
Session 1: Interoception: Moving Beyond Body AwarenessConnection
Session 2: Interoception, Regulation, and Emotional Experience
Session 3: Interoception, Safety, and Therapeutic Change
Learning Objectives:
Webinar 1: Interoception: Moving Beyond Body Awareness
Participants will be able to:
- Differentiate interoception from proprioception and exteroception by describing the neurobiological pathways and brain regions involved in interoceptive processing.
- Analyze how interoceptive signaling and predictive brain processes influence regulation, emotional experience, and behavioral responses in pediatric populations.
Webinar 2: Interoception, Regulation, and Emotional Experience
Participants will be able to:
- Examine how differences in interoceptive processing contribute to patterns of dysregulation, emotional awareness, and behavioral responses in children with diverse clinical presentations.
- Interpret behavioral and emotional responses through an interoceptive framework to support clinical reasoning during pediatric assessment and observation.
Webinar 3: Interoception, Safety, and Therapeutic Application
Participants will be able to:
- Evaluate the relationship between interoception, nervous system safety, and relational co-regulation within pediatric therapeutic contexts.
- Apply interoceptive-based strategies to support regulation, body awareness, and participation in therapy, school, and daily routines.

Presenter: Maude Le Roux, OTR/L, SIPT, ADHD-RSP, DIRFloortime Champion and Expert Training Leader
Bio: Maude Le Roux is a global trainer in multiple methodologies and a mentor to therapists from multidisciplinary teams. She opened her practice, A Total Approach in Glen Mills, PA, USA in 2001, and the satellite office in Allentown, PA in 2023. Maude started her training career in 2007 and opened her online academy in 2019. She has designed the Developmental Pathways Model (DPM), which she applies to her own unique assessment and intervention protocol for major diagnosis such as Dyspraxia, ADHD and Executive Functions, Autism, Reading and Writing Disorders, and Trauma and Attachment. Maude served 9 years on the Board of Directors for ATTACh and currently serves on their Advisory Board. She also serves on the Advisory Board for LSWorks (Neuralign program). She is a co-author of two books and more recently wrote a chapter on Trauma and the Body in “Healing Connections” which launched in September 2024. Maude received an award for “Continued child advocacy” through the ATTACh organization in September 2024. She also received the Champion Award through ICDL in November 2024. Maude has a “whole child” approach to care and intervention and equipping the child, while empowering the parent is at the core of who she is as a clinician and trainer.
