Our bodies are instruments that will support us in our bid to be productive, use our executive functions, and remain calm and regulated while we use our available energy for learning. So many students in our classroom and clients in our therapy rooms are struggling to achieve an even homeostasis in their bodies causing “behaviors” that inhibits their process of learning and achieving in social opportunities. This one-day workshop will cover pertinent research from A.D. Craig and discuss assessment and intervention from a sensory integration and social-emotional perspective. Included will be a discussion on the Polyvagal Theory of Dr. S. Porges bringing theory and practice together in a sensible way to use in therapy sessions and classrooms. Assessment and intervention ideas will include both the postural-praxis perspective as well as the social-emotional lens on behavior.

Why do we need to know about Interoception?

  • It is integral to body awareness with links into praxis and emotional behavioral control
  • The proprioceptive system needs to connect to the interoceptive system for efficient regulation and control
  • Interoception links up with our inner awareness to assist in feeling calm and regulated in a spatial surround
  • Interoception frequently is the missing link in behavior. It is a way of understanding the body’s adaptive response to triggers from the environment in support of efficient function and productivity
  • Interoception is also linked to our emotional awareness and a key ingredient for understanding how emotions feel in our bodies in support of building empathy and perspective taking
