Attachment and Trauma in Pediatric Occupational Therapy Practice

Description
This online workshop was developed through a group of dedicated occupational therapists and intended for all occupational therapists that work within the pediatric population. The numbers of children experiencing abuse and trauma are ever increasing and occupational therapists are intervening in these behaviors from differing behavioral lenses, including sensory integration and developmental theory. This workshop would like to inform therapists of the role of occupational therapy in attachment and trauma informed care, the research we already have accumulated, different theorists, as well as evidenced base care of the pediatric client. Even though this workshop is introductory in nature, the nature of the material leans towards intermediate and/or advanced care practice and assumes understanding in typical development, including sensory integration practice. This is a “must-have” type of workshop in the realm of occupational function as a developing child as well as being a school student. Our hope is to keep building subsequent levels of workshops that would dive deeper into assessment, goal planning and trauma informed care.

Speakers:
JoAnn Kennedy, OTD, MS, OTR/L earned a bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1978 and a clinical doctorate in 2013. She has specialized in treating children with sensory integration disorders in schools and private clinics. Through her doctoral capstone project, “Trauma-Informed Care in Sensory Integration Intervention,” she became a leader in the emerging field of trauma- and attachment-informed occupational therapy. Her private practice, OT-Family Connections, is located in Fairfax, VA.
Tina Champagne, OT, OTD, FAOTA, is the CEO of Cutchins Programs for Children and Families and an international consultant for Champagne Conferences & Consultation. She is also a professor for American International College’s Post Professional Occupational Therapy Doctoral Program. Dr. Champagne has specific expertise in trauma, attachment, sensory integration, a wide variety of therapeutic modalities, and in fostering organizational change. She has numerous publications, including two books, numerous book chapters, continuing education and research articles, and she is a reviewer for nursing and OT journals. She has received many awards for her work and recently became a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association.
Maude Le Roux, OTR/L, SIPT, DIR Expert Trainerspecializes in Sensory Integration services as it applies to functional activities of daily living, including improving the ability of children / students of all ages to partake in his/her learning environment. She began her journey in attachment and trauma informed care through multiple different trainings since 2008. She is a current Member of the ATTACh Board of Directors and responsible for maintaining an OT presence at the annual ATTACh conferences. In addition to operating her private practice, A Total Approach, in Glen Mills, PA, she also hosts an online academy, maudeleroux.com in a variety of different diagnostic categories for assessment and intervention. Maude has presented at conferences in a variety of settings across the US as well as internationally. She has co-authored the book, The Listening Journey, with Francoise Nicoloff, and her second book, Our Greatest Allies, is available on Amazon.com.
Lara Taggart, Ed.D., OTR/L is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Northern Arizona State University (NAU) Occupational Therapy Doctorate Program since July of 2015. She holds a Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy (OT) from AT Still University, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Psychology from ASU. Lara works 10 hours/week at Childhelp. Childhelp is a community mental health clinic that serves children and families who have a trauma background.Her research interests are in infant mental health and the relationship between child and caregiver sensory processing patterns and bonding. She has worked as an OT in various settings, which included outpatient/inpatient rehabilitation for adult and pediatric populations, school setting, and early intervention. Lara has served on the Executive Board of the Arizona Occupational Therapy Association as President and in Pediatric and Neuro Special Interest Groups. She is currently the Arizona Representative Assembly for the national OT board (American Occupational Therapy Association).
Sarah Gayle Schoenbaum, MA/OTRhas always had an overarching theme of integration of psyche and our somatic systems. She studied psychology and dance as an undergraduate and then completed her master’s degree in OT. Sarah has taught intro NDT courses internationally and at the university level. She received a certificate in parent infant psychotherapy from Columbia, which is based on the Tavistock model. Sarah also completed 3 years of Somatic Experiencing training. She believes that the “hands-on” work of craniosacral therapy has informed her work greatly. She currently owns and operates a private practice“Whole Child OT and Sensational Wellness”.

Course Completion Requirement: In order to achieve full AOTA credit, participants would need to be present at each of the 6 presentations. In the case of a clearly stated emergency, the recording of that particular session will be provided and the participant is expected to watch and write a summary paragraph to the presenters of that particular evening.
