Symbolic Play in Children – Recording

When: Online, attendee preference for period of 8 weeks

Description: So many children are referred for therapy due to “behaviors” and developmental delays, including inability to cope in different environments. We frequently find a certain amount of misunderstanding with regards to what these different behaviors may mean. In this recorded workshop of 3 sessions, Maude will discuss the importance of play and how play resolves many behaviors, as the child’s understanding grows about their world, their environment, their role in the family. She discusses the symbolic elements of self-discovery through play in the multiple parts of early development. Maude uses practical examples, borrowed from Disney movies, to explain the importance of different social-emotional milestones as she weaves the intricacies, vulnerabilities and opportunities that play offers to families. This workshop is for any stage or age, from early development, through adolescence, and finds multiple applications across different professions. Discover this magical world of symbolic thinking in children with Maude as she weaves in the mysteries and the practicalities of symbolic growth in children.

Session 1: Guidelines to Symbolic Play across the age spectrum

Session 2: 10 Symbolic themes in play that drives social-emotional maturity

Session 3: 3 case studies across age spectrum to illustrate social-emotional growth

Learning Objectives:

  1. Outline 12 important guidelines to consider in symbolic play
  2. Review 10 symbolic themes across different ages and stages
  3. Consider the impact of “not playing” on growth and development
  4. Provide resources of different thought leaders and programs that will support additional training in symbolic play
  5. Review 1 case study each of early development, elementary school, and adolescence to support the importance of symbolic play for occupational and functional growth in children

Presenter: Maude Le Roux, OTR/L

Bio: Maude is an international trainer in a variety of different courses. She is an accomplished occupational therapist with great affinity for learning and understanding the human brain. She was born and raised in South Africa and graduated from the University of Stellenbosch in Cape Town in 1984. Maude and Charl Le Roux moved to the USA in 1993 and opened A Total Approach in September 2001. Maude is SIPT certified and specializes in Sensory Integration services as it applies to functional activities of daily living, including improving the ability of children / students of all ages to partake in his/her learning environment.

Maude designs her own live courses with regards to occupational functioning of students across different ages and stages of development in a variety of categories. She works with a team of occupational therapists and speech language pathologists in her practice. She is well known for her experience and work with children who are diagnosed with ADHD/Executive Functioning, Autism Spectrum, Attachment, Sensory Processing Disorder, and Dyslexia/ Learning Disabilities. Maude is a mentor to many therapists, including OT and DIR professionals internationally. She opened The Maude Le Roux Academy online in January 2019. She has presented at conferences in a variety of settings across the US as well as internationally. Maude co-authored the book, The Listening Journey, with Francoise Nicoloff, and her second book, Our Greatest Allies, is available on Amazon.com.
