Embodied Trauma: Understanding the Body, Brain and Behavior

When: Online July 10, 17, 24, 31, and August 7, 14, 21, 2025 on Thursdays from 2pm to 3.30pm ET (90 minutes each session)

Description: This 7-week series, Embodied Trauma: Understanding the Body, Brain, and Behavior, offers professionals a comprehensive exploration of trauma's profound impact on the body and mind. Drawing on the latest neuroscience, attachment theory, and somatic practices, this course will deepen your understanding of how trauma shapes both the brain and the body, influencing sensory experiences, emotional regulation, and self-identity. Through a trauma-informed lens, you'll gain invaluable insights into the science behind trauma responses, the role of attachment and family dynamics, and the importance of presence and self-awareness in trauma work. Designed to equip you with a strong theoretical foundation, this series prepares you for more advanced skills in assessment and intervention in subsequent tracks. (Track 2: Assessment and Track 3: Intervention)

Outline / Agenda:

Session 1: July 10, 2025, Introduction to Trauma

Session 2: July 17, 2025, Neurobiology of Trauma

Session 3: July 24, 2025, Attachment Theory and Trauma

Session 4: July 31, 2025, Trauma and Sensory Processing

Session 5: August 7, 2025, The Use of Self in Trauma Work

Session 6: August 14, 2025, Self-Identity and Trauma recovery

Session 7: August 21, 2025, Integrating Trauma Theory into Practice

Learning Objectives: The participant will be able to:

Session 1:

· List the physiological and psychological effects of trauma on the body, including the autonomic nervous system’s responses (fight/flight/freeze) and their long-term impact on health and well-being

· Identify the core concepts of trauma theory, including types of traumas and the foundational principles of trauma-informed care, to create a safe and effective approach in professional practice

Session 2:

· Describe the neurobiological impact of trauma on brain structures such as the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex, and their relationship to emotional and cognitive processing

· Consider the effects of trauma on memory and cognition, focusing on implicit vs. explicit memory systems and their implications for therapeutic intervention

Session 3:

· Investigate the connection between attachment styles and trauma by identifying how secure and insecure attachment dynamics influence trauma responses and emotional regulation

· Recognize the impact of early relational experiences on the development of self-regulation, resilience, and trauma recovery in clients, applying these insights to professional practice

Session 4:

· Describe how trauma affects sensory processing, including sensory overload, hypervigilance, and dissociation, and how these responses manifest in trauma survivors

· Investigate the theoretical concepts of proprioception and interoception in trauma, and how these sensory systems relate to trauma responses and the sense of safety or threat

Session 5:

· Reflect on the role of countertransference and how self-awareness, emotional regulation, and boundaries impact the therapeutic process when working with trauma survivors

· Explore the theoretical concept of the therapeutic "use of self" and its importance in building trust and safety in trauma-informed care

Session 6:

· Examine the effect of trauma on identity formation and the disruption of the sense of self, including how dissociation and fragmentation manifest in trauma survivors

· Consider the theoretical underpinnings of self-reconstruction in trauma recovery, focusing on how trauma affects the self and identity formation across the lifespan

Session 7:

· Synthesize core trauma theories, including neurobiological, attachment, and sensory theories, and how they intersect to form a comprehensive understanding of trauma and its effects on the individual

· Reflect on the relationship between theory and practice in trauma-informed care and prepare for the transition to practical application in subsequent training on trauma assessment and intervention (Track 2 and Track 3).
