Teenagers – Their struggles within – Recording

Description: This 3-session recorded course will bridge the developmental concerns of younger years into this phase of development. The teenager’s inner struggle for autonomy and independence will be highlighted with a discussion on developing a “sense of self”. Social anxieties, acceptance and social emotional development will feature as we also discuss the reasons for defensive and / or withdrawal behaviors. The discussion on ADHD in teenagers will highlight the differences in behavior, including the draw to substance abuse for some, from social-emotional to executive outcomes. We find that many teenagers who arrive for intervention, have unresolved early developmental sensory processing delays that were not integrated and has developed into personality patterns based on their profiles instead of their intelligence or natural affinities. There still seems to be an unspoken rule that teenagers are not supposed to be treated for developmental delay as they have “aged out”. This frequently means that teenagers will go from one counselor to the next, discussing their problem behavior, yet never really getting to the bottom of why their behavior developed this way. These sessions will highlight the necessity of ensuring understanding for the teenager and their coping strategies as we also seek to demystify for them why they feel “different” than their peers. Intervention considerations and strategies will also be discussed. It is never “too late”, but we have to accommodate differently for them through different assessment, intervention and relational strategies.
