The Brain, Development, Reading and Written Expression - Recording

Description: The numbers of students struggling with reading is ever increasing and even though much science has evolved, questions remain if the time invested is commensurate to progress. Reading is an acquired skill in the brain, not something we are born with. This workshop series will focus on the developmental pathways necessary to gain the skill of reading. The information gathered will consider reading decoding as well as comprehension and consider what the science is telling us today. A team approach is necessary to support students in achieving higher proficiency and work according to their potential. Research is clear that reading and writing are skills that need to be taught together to assist multisensory pathways in integration. Both reading and writing share multiple networks in the brain, even as they each add distinctive differences as well. The journey through this workshop series will be an enlightening one, and will prepare the participant for Track 2, when we will consider the developmental assessments necessary to determine which building blocks are vulnerable and in need of remediation to achieve higher function.

Provider Name: The Maude Le Roux Academy

Presenter: Maude Le Roux OTR/L, IMC, SIPT, CTC, DIR-FT International Trainer

Bio: Maude Le Roux is an occupational therapist who owns and directs a learning center, A Total Approach, in Pennsylvania, USA. She is an expert in developmental ages and stages and has trained internationally in her methods since 2007. Maude developed her assessment and intervention program for the skill of reading and writing over the past 12 years, pulling from experiences spanning 40 years of clinical practice. She has completed several certifications considering reading and writing and has built her eclectic approach from a variety of sources and mentors she values. Maude is a firm believer that if typical development is good enough for the typical developer, it must be good enough for the atypical developer. Her approach to reading and writing is not educational, but developmental in support of education. She values the impact of a team approach that considers individual differences in raising the bar to unlock the potential for each student. Maude acknowledges the social-emotional implications of struggling learners and operates from her mantra: If students could, they would. She opened the virtual Maude Le Roux Academy in 2019 and lives with her husband, Charl, and beloved Airedale, Simba in the suburbs of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania.

What People Are Saying:

This is a wonderful workshop considering the developmental levels of reading. It has broadened my understanding in how developmental foundations can be so important to master the skill of reading. Maude provides a detailed explanation in the various developmental systems and levels, and how they influence reading skills. Following this course, I am very interested to learn more about assessments and treatments.

Melissa Di Fruscia, Canada

The Reading Skill Course was short and comprehensive. Maude explained in a concise and focused manner what is needed to build reading readiness. Looking forward for the next levels of this course.

Alina Burrah, Israel

Getting the full scope of a topic is what I have come to depend upon from courses with Maude. Learning about the developmental stages of executive level skill is so valuable and so far ahead of common practice these days. Tying in the social-emotional components is a rare find in courses about reading, but how can we really do without considering that aspect?

Judy Feingold, USA

This theoretical course provided me solid foundation for future reading courses. Practical examples were given throughout the course, making it easy to apply in therapy.
